The patch when applied generates an electric microcurrent. These currents have been shown to enhance drug penetration, cause accelerated wound healing, and initiate remodeling of the dermis. Therefore, applications include increasing bioavailability for pharmaceuticals in a drug delivery setting, accelerated wound healing in trauma applications and cosmetic indications including wrinkle management.
The device can be applied to large markets including beauty, healing, and health. Accelerated delivery of hyaluronic acid and similar wrinkle reduction and beautification agents combined with the pleasant tingling (“organoleptic”) effect make the device a prime candidate for the cosmetic industry. Additionally, advanced wound management, delivery of anti-microbials and pharmaceutical deliverable where genetic constructs could be transposed into cells are potential applications in the pharmaceutical market.
Unlike most devices with similar concepts there is no external power source, the electroactive microneedles produce the current in situ
through the dissolution of “Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)” chemicals that are included in the dissolvable needle composition. A variety of topologies for pharmaceutical/cosmetic applications are available and the electromotive force is tunable depending on the application. Additionally, the organoleptic effect teaches functionality. The simplistic design is hygienic and easy to use.
The ingredients used to manufacture the product are safe as mentioned above. The electric fields are too small to cause electrochemical damage to the skin and instead will promote healing and remodeling of the skin for a more youthful appearance.
We are not aware of any differences in functionality between aged and young skin or different skin colors.
Dissolvable, safe, half-cells form a battery underneath the skin that delivers the positive effects of the device. For further detail, please refer to the executive summary and the patent.
The EMF depends on the anode and cathode redox pairs; for our preferred copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) ~900 millivolts DC is typical. This is a low voltage that is safe, but the magnitude is sufficient to provide the organoleptic and other physiological effects desired.
The anode and cathode pairs produce EMF that can be felt at the point of application as a mild tingling. This “organoleptic” effect can be adjusted for intensity and duration by tuning the chemical composition and physical volume and geometry of the microneedles.

In the US, the FDA regulates both cosmetic and pharmaceutical drug/device combinations such as this one. The extent of regulatory oversight and difficulty of regulatory approval are application dependent and need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
The materials used are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)” chemicals and excipients that form the structural and electromotive elements of the needle. For further information, please refer to the executive summary and the patent.
Currently they are manufactured in the laboratory using manual molding techniques. We are actively seeking a partnership that can provide commercial volume manufacturing.
