The patch when applied generates an electric microcurrent. These currents have been shown to enhance drug penetration, cause accelerated wound healing, and initiate remodeling of the dermis. Therefore, applications include increasing bioavailability for pharmaceuticals in a drug delivery setting, accelerated wound healing in trauma applications and cosmetic indications including wrinkle management.

Accelerated delivery of hyaluronic acid and similar wrinkle reduction and beautification agents combined with the pleasant tingling (“organoleptic”) effect make the device a prime candidate for the cosmetic industry. Additionally, advanced wound management, delivery of anti-microbials and pharmaceutical deliverable where genetic constructs could be transposed into cells are potential applications in the pharmaceutical market.

Unlike most devices with similar concepts there is no external power source, the electroactive microneedles produce the current in situ

through the dissolution of “Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)” chemicals that are included in the dissolvable needle composition. A variety of topologies for pharmaceutical/cosmetic applications are available and the electromotive force is tunable depending on the application. Additionally, the organoleptic effect teaches functionality. The simplistic design is hygienic and easy to use.
